'The Dance of The 7 Veils'

Led by Rev. Pamela Joy Giese
Sound performed by Zassō Fūkei

Rev. Pamela Joy Giese’s ritual, ‘The Dance Of The Seven Veils’ had the audience chanting the sound of the seven central chakra points, guided in note by Zasso Fukei on the harmonium. This, together with the dancers, who were adorned with and later relieved of seven colourful veils, created an environment to take us on a journey to the soul.

Pamela writes: “In the ancient wisdom traditions, the Dance of the Seven Veils was the reenactment of the descent of the soul into incarnation on this plane, followed by the liberation or ascent of the soul out of this incarnation and into the afterlife. This dance is an initiation in the way that all initiations involve a death to the old self and a rebirth to the new.

This is a cosmic dance. Each level of existence is a planet, and a veil is donned for each planet. As we don the veil, we take on the weight/responsibility of that energy. When we ascend, we liberate ourselves from the burden of each dimensional experience of life. A short meditation/contemplative time will accompany each level so that the participant can immerse themselves in the level.

In the teachings of Gnosticism, we incarnate to this world to experience life. To do this, the soul descends, every encasing itself in denser and denser material.  When our work here is down, we shake off the shackles of the material world and ascend into lighter and lighter states of being. The soul is then free to swim in the oneness of other souls until the time for the next incarnation arises and the cycle of descent/ascent is again repeated.”

The first four videos on this page show extracts of the 20 minute performance.

This video was used to advertise the final performance using footage from the opening night of the exhibition.
